MULTIMEDIA:

NEW YORK, May 2, 2011 — Affect, a public relations and social media firm, and Strutta, an interactive promotions company offering an intuitive contest builder that enables businesses to manage fully branded online contests, today announced the winner of The New York Intern Project, a contest searching for Affect’s next summer intern. Patrick Gotham, a senior at Salisbury University in Maryland, impressed judges with his can-do attitude, impeccable writing skills and relevant experience in marketing and managing teams.

As the winner, Patrick will receive a three-month internship at Affect that will prepare him to start his career in the industry. He will also receive $5,000 and a housing stipend of up to $5,000 to live in New York City for the summer.

Patrick is a marketing and management major at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland. Patrick’s campus leadership experience shone through during his interviews, as he was able to demonstrate how serving as president of the university Inter-Fraternity Council, as well as president of the Student Government Association, provided him opportunities to put his academic coursework into action. More importantly, Patrick demonstrated passion for his chosen career and a desire to continue his professional education in a fast-paced agency environment.

Launched in February, The New York Intern Project challenged prospective interns who were dreaming about starting a career in public relations, marketing and social media to submit creative and persuasive video or photo entries to the contest web site http://www.nyinternproject.com , on why they would make the ideal intern. The entrants were then charged with marketing themselves to their networks and the public on social media in order to elicit enough votes to earn their place as one of the six semi-finalists.

The New York Intern Project garnered 96 entrants from across North America and with diverse backgrounds. The applicants earned a combined total of 14,360 votes and the contest web site saw over 62,000 visitors. To help choose the winning candidate from the group of semi-finalists, Affect and Strutta tapped leaders in the public relations, marketing and social media arena as judges. The judges included Guy Kawasaki, acclaimed author and founder of Garage Technology Ventures and Alltop, Erica Swallow, associate editor for social media news source Mashable, and Jessica Dickler, a careers writer for CNN Money. Sandra Fathi, Affect’s founder and president and Leslie Campisi, vice president and partner for the agency, rounded out the team of judges.

“When we created The New York Intern Project, we turned the traditional interview process on its head – as the entrants literally had to prove their social media and PR prowess in order to be in serious contention for the position. It was not easy to narrow down the group of talented finalists to just one winner, since each one of them would have been a fantastic intern in their own right,” said Sandra Fathi, founder and president of Affect. “Ultimately, Patrick stood out due to his natural talent and obvious passion for marketing. We’re looking forward to welcoming Patrick as a new member of our team and seeing his contributions.”

“I am beyond excited to work in New York City at Affect this summer,” said Patrick. “The weeks of Facebook posts, tweets and text messages soliciting votes really paid off. I can’t wait to start soaking up as much knowledge as I can. Now, I just need to find a place to live!”

The The New York Intern Project was powered by Strutta’s Contest Builder platform, which allows companies to create a promotion where users participate by uploading content such as videos, photos, audio or text. This format allows for easy sharing and voting.

“We’ve enjoyed being an integral part of The New York Intern Project, and seeing the creativity and social media skills that the format of the contest pushed the applicants to showcase,” said Ben Pickering, CEO for Strutta. “This contest underscores the power of social media to excite, engage and rally a community.”
