NEW YORK, May 15, 2012 — Affect, a public relations and social media firm specializing in B2B technology, healthcare and professional services, and Strutta, a leading platform for online promotions with an intuitive contest builder, today announced Katey Kimpel as the winner of The New York Intern Project, a contest searching for Affect’s next summer intern.Katey Kimpel, a senior at the University of Akron, created a compelling video as part of her entry in the contest that included recommendations from fellow students and faculty. Katey initially became a semi-finalist by attracting 1,205 out of the 15,953 in total votes that were cast by the public and moved on to become one of two finalists after impressing the five judges in Skype interviews. Last week, Katey was flown to New York for a final in-person interview with the Affect team and sealed her fate as the winner of the New York Intern Project.“I am excited and honored to be chosen as the grand prize winner of The New York Intern Project,” said Kimpel. “I can’t wait to work and learn from the entire Affect team.”As the winner, Katey will receive a three-month internship at Affect that will prepare her to start her career in the industry. She will also receive $5,000 and a housing stipend of up to $2,500 to live in New York City for the summer. Katey will return to school in the Fall to complete her BA in Communications where she is also President of her local university’s Public Relations Student Society of America(PRSSA).“This year, we were particularly impressed by the quantity and quality of the candidates who entered the New York Intern Project,” said Sandra Fathi, president, Affect. “The contest is designed to allow entrants to showcase their PR and social media abilities – and they did! Katey impressed us with her video entry as well as her personal campaign to garner more than 1200 votes and 22 comments. However, it was her passion and enthusiasm for Affect and public relations that truly won over the judges in our interviews.”Launched in 2011, The New York Intern Project challenges prospective interns who are dreaming about starting a career in public relations, marketing and social media to submit creative video or photo entries to the contest web site, nyinternproject.com/, on why they would make the ideal intern. The entrants are then asked to market themselves to their networks and the public on social media in order to elicit enough votes to earn their place as one of the top five semi-finalists who are also joined by a ‘wildcard’ entry hand-picked by the judges. The 2012 New York Intern Project garnered 110 entrants from across North America with diverse backgrounds. The applicants earned a combined total of 15,953 votes and 161 comments generating approximately 263,000 page views for the contest. The judges included Peter Shankman, vice president and small business evangelist at Vocus, Deirdre Breakenridge, author, entrepreneur and CEO of Pure Performance Communications, and Julia Hood, EVP at Haymarket Media, which oversees PRWeek, Sandra Fathi, founder and president of Affect and Katie Creaser, vice president at Affect. The New York Intern Project was powered by Strutta’s Contest Builder platform, which allows companies to create a promotion where users participate by uploading content such as videos, photos, audio or text. This format allows for easy sharing and voting.
